It is a neophyte which was introduced in the mid 1790s as a
garden plant. It had become naturalised by the mid 1890s in
wet meadows.
In gardens it can be a persistent weed.
Yellow-eyed-grass is a rhizomatous, clump-forming, grass-like
herb, growing up to 30cm.
Flowers are yellow, with 6 petals, spread stamens and orange
anthers.
Stems (scapes) are flattened and winged.
Fruits are tri-lobed capsules.
Leaves are stiff, dark green and slightly fleshy.
