It grows in dry grasslands, scrub, woods and quarries, on
lime
Woolly Thistle is a native, robust, spinny, perennial herb,
growing up to 1.5m.
The flowers are large (up to 7cm) with dark red purple
florets, above globular spiny bracts.
Anthers are blue-purple.
Bracts are covered in a network of white wool.
Leaves are pinnately lobed, spiny and up to 60cm.
The stems are unwinged with spiny upper leaves.
