It is found mainly in the Southwest and in parts of the

Northwest, East Anglia and the Southeast. It is thinly

scattered elsewhere.

Habitat

It is native on rocks, screes and quarries, and has become

naturalised in similar well drained dry habitats such as

railways and waste ground.

It has been widely planted in garden rockeries and in

churchyards from where it has also escaped and

become naturalised.

It is increasing.

Description

Rock Stonecrop is a native, colony-forming, perennial herb

growing up to 30cm.

The flowers are in bright yellow, slightly domed

flowerheads several cms across.

Each flower has between 6 and 8 petals up to 120mm.

There are approximately twice as many stamens as petals.

Styles are bottle-shaped and tapered.

The leaves are pale, fleshy and upright and adjacent to the

stems. 

Leaves wither at the base of the stems.

The creeping stems have both flowering and sterile upright

stems, which together form a mat.
