Habitat

 It is a neophyte from South Africa which has been grown

in gardens for a 100 years or so. It has escaped into the

wild in the Scillies and become naturalised on .St Mary's

and St Martins.

It is found as a relic plant in old bulb fields, on wasteland

and grass verges.

Description

Red Corn-lily is a cormous herb growing up to 40cm.

The flowers are in a crowded spike.

The 6 red tepals are fused at the base to form a short

perianth tube.

There are 3 stamens and a style with 3 linear branches.

The leaves are broad and iris-like.
