It grows on scrubland and in woods and hedgerows.
On the Isles of Scilly, low-growing Honeysuckle is a
componentt of waved- maritime-heath, together with
Heather and Western Gorse.
Honeysuckle is a native, deciduous, perennial, climbing
and twining (clockwise) shrub, growing up to 7m or more.
The flowers are in a terminal whorl of up to 5cm.
Individual flowers comprise a long tube with a wide
2-lipped opening. The upper lip is made up of 4 fused
petals and the lower lip of one spreading petal.
The outside of the flowers vary from yellow to red and
purple, and is glandular (the flowers are sweet-smelling).
The inside is is creamy-white, which darkens after
pollination.
There are 5 long stamens.
The style is long and thin and the stigma is capitate.
Fruits are red and spherical.
Leaves are up to 7cm, ovate to oblong, opposite, and
dark green above and greyish below.
Stems are green or purple, and twining, but may be
low-growing, scrambling or trailing.
