It is a neophyte, which was introduced from New Zealand
in the late 1850s and noted in the wild in the 1930s.
It is planted as hedging in gardens and amenity areas.
In the Scilly Islands it was used as a hedge to delineate
bulb fields and to protect the crops from wind and salt.
It is well naturalised on coastal waste ground, rocky
places, paving and walls, and sea-cliffs.
It appears to be increasing its range.
Hedge Veronica is an evergreen shrub growing up to 2m.
The flowers are on purple spikes (occasionally pink
or white).
Flowers have 4 purple petal-lobes and 2 purple, protruding
stamens.
The seed capsule is laterally flattened and the seeds are
fully fertile.
Leaves are oval, glossy and dark green.
