It is a neophyte brought from the Caucasus in the early
1800s and is widely grown in UK gardens.
It has been known in the wild since the early 1900s
and grows in hedges, by road and rail and on walls.
It spreads by seeds and garden throw outs.
Fern-leaf Yarrow is a perennial, rhizomatous, aromatic
herb growing up to 1.5m.
Flowers are in dense yellow corymbs up to 10cm
across.
Flowerheads (capitula) are up to 3.5mm across and
composed of tubular florets with 5 yellow lobes
(ligules).
Ray florets are mainly female and have a single style
with a devided linear stigma.
Disk florets are mainly male and have 5 stamens.
The capitula are above the green phyllaries
The leaves are deeply divided and fern-like.
The stems are woody and wiry.
Fern-leaf Yarrow has traditionally been used
as an insect repellent and in alternative
medicine.
