It is a neophyte which has been planted in gardens and
parks to attract butterflies since the 1890s .
It has been known in the wild since the 1920s and is now
widely naturalised on waste ground, by roads, paths and
railways, and on walls, where it damages and distorts
the mortar, and in cracks on buildings and chimneys.
It appears to be on the increase.
The Butterfly Bush is a deciduous shrub growing up
to 8m.
Flower spikes are 10 to 30cm long, have large numbers of
fragrant flowers.
Each flower is up to 1cm across with 4 petals and a longish
corolla tube.
The nectar is very attractive to butterflies and other
insects.
Leaves are lanceolate, dark green and up to 25cm long.
