The peak flowering season is from March to June, but it
can be found sporadically at other times of the year
including January.
It has been planted throughout the country since the 18th
century, and has been a naturalised escape since the
1920s, mainly in the Southwest.
It is on the increase.

It grows in the wild on walls, paths, cracks at the base
of walls and waste ground, particularly in the Southwest.
Aubretia is a mat-forming perennial herb growing up
to 30cm.
The flowers are 2-3cm across, with 4 petals of various
shades of bluish purple, violet and red.
There are 4 to 6 stamens and the anthers are creamy
white.
The stigma is round and flat (capitate).
The sepals are hairy and shorter than the corolla tube.
Pods are plump with 2 rows of seeds.
Leaves are oval with short hairs.
