Apple is widely planted for fruit in orchards and gardens.
It is also naturalised as single trees in hedges, brownfield
sites, small woods, beside roads and footpaths and on
wasteland.
Apple, its flowers, leaves and sizes, are variable,
reflecting its many origins.
Its distribution is similar to that of the native crab
apple, Malus sylvestris, with which it readily hybridises.
Eating apples are known mainly by their varietal name.
